Implementation of technical intelligence in manufacturing systems

Abstract

Industry 4.0 is a German initiative to integrate digital solutions in manufacturing by appication of modern solutions for data management and IT- communication in the industrial world. On shop floor level efficiency and performance (time, cost, quality) of processes can be encreased by a systemarchitecture following the ideas of organic computing with sensors for data collection, signal analytic for recogntion of patterns, process models and real time simulation and flexible automated devices for actions. Their integration to a decentralised manufacturing control system has the potential of technical intelligence. Basic functions of such a learning system architecture will be described with examples of parts manufacturing

Curriculum Prof. Westkämper

Engelbert Westkämper (1946) Professor Dr.-Ing. Prof. E.h. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Dr.h.c. (mult)

Westkämper studied Mechanical Engineering and Production technologies at the RWTH Aachen. After study and doctoral degree, he started his industrial carreer of 10 years with leading positions in the German aircraft industry and in the electric/electronic industry with responsibilities for manufacturing technologies and manufacturing engineering and strategies.

Westkämper was appointed as Professor for industrial Manufacturing Technologies and Management at the Universities of Braunschweig (1988) and Stuttgart (1995). He became dean of the faculty of mechanical engineering and a was a member of the advisory board in the university Stuttgart. He founded several spin offs and the Graduate School of Excellence for advanced Manufacturing Engineering (GSaME) in the University Stuttgart.

Fraunhofer appointed him 1995 as director of the Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) in Stuttgart, where he played a central role in the application-oriented research in Germany and the strategic development of many industrial sectors.

Westkämper was awarded by universities in Magdeburg (Germany), Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and Charkov (Ukraina). He is a member of the German acatech, the national „Akademie der Technikwissenschaften“ and fellow of CIRP, the leading Organization in Production Engineering Research. He is one of the principal investigators and member of the High Level Group of the EU Technology Platform ManuFuture.

He retired 2011 from University Stuttgart and Fraunhofer IPA. He published many Papers in international Journals and the books „The ManuFutre Road“, “Towards Re-Industrialization of Europe – A concept for Manufacturing 2030” and “Strategien der Production”.
